Healing Moments Sometimes Sneak Up On Us

I was videotaping a class today and when I got the results of the videotape back, I saw that I was lucky enough to teach in a beam of light. I saw these images and nearly cried.

I recently hurt my back - badly - being pulled by my gigantic dog. Thankfully, I have some experience with what to do, so I immediately made a few appointments to get me back on track. I’m much better, but I still in a lot of pain, trying to teach my clients and classes. I mean, it’s COVID and we’re in quarantine, and we all need a reason to show up.

One of my first healing experiences was when I was injured 20 years ago and I was at my lowest point—frustrated, tired of hurting every single minute of every single day... I had a little coffee shop in Barboursville then and I was in such pain.

I’ll never forget sneaking out back to hide the fact that I was crying. There was a huge rock in my backyard and there was a sunbeam shining on it. I crawled onto that rock and laid on my back. I cried—not an active crying but rather tears flowing like a water faucet with no energy behind them.

I fell asleep.

I got up after who knows how long and for the first time in what seemed like years, my back didn’t hurt... it didn’t last more than a few hours but it was the first relief I’d had in so long. It was a turning point for me. I had started seeing an osteopath a few months before, and had started learning Pilates, so maybe that was kicking in, but in my mind it was that rock and that beam of light that started my healing journey and I’ll never forget it.

That day gave me hope. Hope that things could improve.

I took today’s sunlight as a good sign.

My hope has been renewed. I know it will be okay.
