Frequently Asked Questions

  • While Pilates classes and Megaformer (Lagree) classes may look similar at first glance, they are fundamentally different practices with distinct goals, methods, and outcomes.

Pilates is a movement-based system rooted in alignment, control, and efficiency. It has been extensively researched for its therapeutic benefits and is widely used for injury prevention, sports performance, rehabilitation, and movement training. Developed by Joseph Pilates, the method has long supported long-term physical health with evidence-based outcomes.

Pilates is also known for the rigor of its training and certifications vary from 100 hours to over 300 hours, not including apprenticeships and teacher practicum hours.

    Pilates focuses on:

    • Control, alignment, breath, mobility, strength, and balance

    • Quality of movement before adding speed or intensity

    • Developing body awareness and efficient movement patterns

    • Building strength while improving posture, joint health, and coordination

    Pilates is especially beneficial for:

    • Injury prevention and rehabilitation

    • Long-term strength, mobility, and resilience

    • Improving how you move in daily life and sport

    Pilates equipment includes:

    • Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, and mat

    • Springs that assist or challenge movement, allowing exercises to be scaled to the individual

Megaformer (Lagree) classes are based on the Lagree method and are taught on a Megaformer machine. While it may visually resemble a Pilates Reformer, it is designed differently, with a larger platform, heavier resistance, and a different approach to loading the body.

Exercises in Lagree classes are designed to:

    • Create high levels of muscular fatigue

    • Be performed slowly with minimal rest

    • Emphasize strength and endurance through sustained tension

    Lagree equipment includes:

    • Megaformers

Both Pilates and Lagree have a place in the fitness world β€” but they are not the same and serve different purposes depending on an individual’s goals, needs, and background.

  • Pilates and yoga may share some similarities β€” both emphasize breath, focus, flexibility, and mind–body awareness β€” but they are fundamentally different in their purpose, structure, and approach.

Pilates is a modern movement system developed specifically to improve how the body moves. It focuses on posture, alignment, strength, mobility, and coordination, with the goal of helping people move better in everyday life, sport, and work.

Pilates uses both mat work and specialized equipment (such as the Reformer, Cadillac, and Chair) that provide resistance and support, allowing for a form of low-impact, resistance-based strength training. Pilates mat classes use body weight and props (similar to yoga), but the method emphasizes strengthening the body through its full range of motion rather than holding long static stretches.

Pilates main focus is exercise-based and not spiritually rooted, though many people experience it as calming and meditative β€” a natural byproduct of focused, intentional movement and its effect on the nervous system.

At Posture Studio, Pilates is closely integrated with physical therapy principles, making it especially effective for injury prevention, rehabilitation, and long-term musculoskeletal health.

Yoga, by contrast, is an ancient spiritual practice rooted in Eastern traditions and is a way of life for many people. While some experience yoga primarily through physical postures, those poses are only one part of a broader tradition that also includes meditation, breath work, and philosophical teachings.

Yoga is generally a non-equipment-based practice, using body weight along with props for support. It places a greater emphasis on flexibility, longer-held stretches, and sustained postures, often with a meditative or contemplative component.

  • Wear anything that you feel comfortable moving in but chose clothing wisely in order to avoid any β€˜malfunctions’.

MEN: Please wear tighter athletic shorts underneath any baggy shorts.

About Feet: Sticky socks are encouraged. Socks that are not sticky may not be worn during workouts due to the danger of slipping. We do allow bare feet in the studio, but if you have any issues with your feet that could be contagious, socks are required. We sell socks in the front of the studio.

Please no belts or sharp buttons on the equipment and no high heels on the floors.

  • Please do not eat a heavy meal before class but also do not arrive on an empty stomach. The exercises at Posture Studio work on deep core muscles, take concentration and require stamina. You do not want to practice with low blood sugar levels. Bring water to class. We do have snacks and water for purchase in the studio.

  • Yes, there are pre-requisites for classes.

Rehab classes: Must speak to the instructor or to the studio manager before joining. These are NOT beginner classes. They require knowledge of the equipment and Pilates-based exercises.

Intermediate Plus: Must have taken Intermediate Classes previously.

  • Beginner classes are offered in a series and are designed for those who are brand new to Pilates. You’ll learn the fundamentals of Pilates including breath work, whole body stability and mobility, and strength training exercises.

Gentle classes are for anyone who wants a slower, gentler Pilates class.

Rehab classes are for those who have chronic issues and want a therapeutic class. Note that you must be approved by the studio to take rehab classes.

Intermediate classes are for those who are comfortable on the Pilates Reformer and are ready to being adding more difficult exercises. These classes require more strength, balance and control.

Intermediate Plus classes are the next level up from Intermediate. Classes might include cardio or more strength training, along with exercises that challenge balance and endurance.

Advanced Classes may be either more advanced strength training and higher intensity cardio on the Pilates Equipment OR more advanced Pilates based exercises that require more balance and strength.

  • In order to join a more advanced class, you must have previous experience on Pilates equipment and an understanding of principles of Pilates exercises.

If you have never been on the Pilates equipment, please take our beginner Pilates classes or a series of intro sessions. If you’d prefer to discuss with an instructor, please give us a call.

  • Improvement will be noticed with one session weekly, although many clients enjoy 2-3 classes weekly. We do encourage clients to try mat classes as well as equipment classes since matwork is truly the heart of the Pilates practice. Clients find that 1 equipment class plus 1 mat class or 2 equipment classes make them feel wonderful.
