Chin Tucks. We've all heard of them. We've all done them.

Almost everyone I know has been prescribed them by a PT or a trainer.

That's great--except all too often I see someone who recently learned about chin tucks and they are walking around thinking that their neck should be in that position.

The chin tuck is an EXERCISE.

It is used to help strengthen muscles to return the head to a neutral, supported position over the torso. It is NOT something to hold all of the time.

All too often, I find that clients give up on postural tips or exercises because they think they cannot "hold" that position. They're right! It's NOT natural to hold a chin tuck or ahem Pilates world -- I'm looking at you -- pull your belly button to spine.

These are not normal postural moves. They are exercises or CUES to help.

But I find that it's essential to make sure clients understand the GOAL.

So... here's my tutorial on the whys and hows of the chin tuck... and the goal.

Have fun. Practice your chin tucks. Then cut it out and enjoy your new-found neck placement.

Hope it helps. As always, I love hearing your comments.
