Small group training makes all the difference.
We teach small group classes with no more than 3 people on Pilates equipment at a time and no more than 6 people in a mat class. Learn more about the benefits of small group training.
The instructors at Posture Studio are trained not only in Pilates and other exercise techniques, but have also had years of training in being able to recognize and correct postural alignment issues. Each instructor teaches with a keen eye on their client's postural alignment and movement patterns. The difference that this type of training can make is truly amazing. Education is often the missing link in exercise. We believe that education is the key to helping people improve their posture and strengthen their bodies without creating tension. We educate our clients on how to improve their posture with their workout, and, in doing so, how to improve overall efficiency and performance.
Carla Shifflett, Founder and Instructor
Carla was first drawn to pilates in 1998 while rehabilitating her own body. In 2002, she became a certified Pilates instructor through The Physical Mind Institute and has also studied the STOTT PILATES method extensively. Carla later worked at The Albemarle Center for Health & Rehabilitation and found that years of working with an injured population taught her the art of seeing structural imbalances clearly.
Holding a BA in Philosophy and Religion, Carla returned to school to study the sciences in 2005 and continues to study movement analysis and physical therapy techniques. She opened Posture Studio as a way to educate clients in hopes that she could keep others from developing chronic pain in their own lives. Carla currently works with a range of people, varying from post-rehabilitative clients to athletes. She also enjoys mentoring other instructors by teaching them the art of seeing and correcting postural alignment.
Outside of work, Carla enjoys spending time with her partner, Sebastian, and their two small children.
Shannon Slovensky, Instructor
Shannon holds a BS in Health Sciences and a M.Ed. in Clinical Exercise Physiology from the University of Virginia. She has been teaching movement in Charlottesville since 2000, both in group and individual settings.
Shannon has worked with adults of all ages, but mostly elderly adults in a cardiac population. She first discovered Posture Studio as a client while working to help correct sports-related misalignment. Shannon continued to study pilates and posture as a compliment to running, yoga and other activities.
Becoming a Posture Studio instructor in 2008, Shannon brings a wealth of information to her clients with her compassionate teaching style.
Grace Daniels, Instructor
Grace has been studying movement most of her life. She discovered yoga at age 15, the same year that she began teaching. She was first introduced to Pilates while earning her BFA in Dance at The California Institute Of The Arts.
While in Los Angeles, Grace had a successful career as a ballet, jazz, modern, and West African dancer and choreographer. During this time, she continued to teach both Pilates and yoga. Grace has her 200 hour Yoga Alliance certification and has years of Pilates training, studying a range of Pilates styles including classical Pilates, the Isacowitz Method and Stott Pilates.
Grace joined Posture Studio in 2010. With close to 35 years of teaching experience, Grace has developed a teaching style that is unique and informative. Her desire to develop a fluid mind-body connection and a clear understanding of body mechanics for her clients continues to grow. Grace is elated to have been asked to join the Posture Studio family.

Posture Studio opened in 2006 with the goal of teaching Pilates while also educating clients about posture as it pertains to their own bodies. The instructors at Posture Studio decode the mystery of alignment and instruct each class with attention to individual needs.

Maggie McSpedon, Instructor
Maggie has been practicing Pilates since she was a child as her mother has worked in the industry for nearly thirty years. Over the years, Maggie had the privilege of learning from several of the Pilates elders including Lolita San Miguel and Mary Bowen. Completing her Pilates certification through Balanced Body University in 2014, Maggie has experience teaching all levels of Pilates on every Pilates apparatus.
Maggie is also trained in the Lotte Burke method (barre) and enjoys teaching barre classes to youth as well as adults.
Megan Vail, Instructor
Megan earned her B.A. in French and Theater from the University of Hawaii in 2004, studying in France for two semesters. While studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, Megan was introduced to Pilates and has been a devotee ever since. In 2013 Megan earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Lynchburg College, graduating magna cum laude. As a graduate student, Megan taught Pilates and injury prevention to upper level dancers at The Dance Theater of Lynchburg.
Currently Megan works as an orthopedic physical therapist at the downtown ACAC. Her patient population ranges from teenage to geriatric and includes athletes, pre and post partum women and joint repairs of all varieties. She also has extensive training working with neurological and vestibular impairments as well as more involved woman's health issues.
Faith Levine, Instructor
Faith holds a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah. Faith has spent most of her life studying movement. She began studying dance at the age of 5. By 17, Faith had discovered that running, strength training, hiking, and practicing yoga and Pilates supported her dance training, feeding her love of moving while also learning about the body.
After receiving her degree in modern dance, Faith lived in Portland, Oregon, where she taught dance, mat Pilates, yoga, strength training, and worked as a personal trainer while also dancing professionally.
Faith moved to Charlottesville in 2010 and has continued teaching in the Charlottesville area. She is currently on the dance faculty at Piedmont Virginia Community College and also at teaches at ACAC. Faith's teaching is easily described as lovely with the intellect to accompany her teaching gift. Faith approaches her classes with a comprehensive knowledge base and kindness that is palpable. Faith is a wonderful teacher and we welcome her to Posture Studio.
Liz Reynolds, Instructor
Liz holds a MFA in dance from Temple University in Philadelphia and has studied movement in various forms for most of her life. Liz has been a dancer in companies in New York and Philadelphia, and is currently an adjunct professor for dance at Piedmont Virginia Community College. She also enjoys teaching other forms of movement including both yoga and Pilates.
Liz first discovered Pilates as a way to deepen her awareness of mind/body techniques and anatomical knowledge, and continues to study movement analysis and postural retraining techniques.
In 2005 while dancing for a company in New York City, Liz received her comprehensive Pilates certification at Sal Anthony's Movement Salon, a program which encouraged developmental dexterity. While earning her masters in dance at Temple, Liz also began practicing yoga and fell in love with the physical, mental and spiritual journey that each practice offered.
Liz offers a unique perspective on movement. She has the aesthetic eye of a dancer, the postural and anatomical knowledge of a Pilates teacher, and the calm and clear presence of a yoga practitioner. Liz offers her students a wide range of information and we are happy to welcome her to the Posture Studio team.
Veronica Hart, Instructor
Veronica Hart is originally from Long Island, New York. She formerly performed and toured with Charleston Ballet Theatre, San Diego Ballet, The Garage Contemporary Ballet, and Charlottesville Ballet. Veronica has been teaching ballet, modern dance, jazz, and barre classes for fifteen years. She began her Pilates training through Balanced Body in 2015. Veronica is also the Founder and Director of concorDance contemporary, a local professional dance company, and serves as Co-Artistic Director at Albemarle Ballet Theatre in Crozet, VA.
